ON TRENDS: STYLE IS ETERNAL

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Although I'm frequently sharing my wardrobe, style obsessions and projects, I realize that I'm not sharing enough of one very important thing - my thoughts. I tend to stick with the visual, but let's go with the intellectual today and delve into a little topic very near and dear to my fashion frenzied heart.

Trends come and go, but in the words of Yves Saint Laurent - "style is eternal." Style is something that isn't learned or plagerized from others like a shoddy high school essay; style is something that is cultivated and emerges from within a person to create a unique and personal representation of that person's life, loves and interests. So often though, especially in the clutches of the overly monetized fashion industry, authenticity gets lost and the trends of the moment overtake any hint of true creativity.

This all is of course, very unfortunate - but hope isn't lost. With the advancement of the internet age and opportunity lurking around every corner of the web, those who still strive to hold on to their uniqueness without "selling out" chip away at building a foundation for fashion freedom without limitations or criticisms from the strict and often unforgiving couture world.

These fashion innovators bring us opportunities to share our style, share our voices and connect with others who enjoy the same fashion freedoms. There are so many encouraging websites, and more appearing every day - Lookbook.nu, StyleCaster, IFB, Chictopia and Stylelikeu to name a few -  create a platform to help individualize the fashion experience. They include countless fashion bloggers -- unafraid to share their thoughts and wardrobes with the world. Communities that offer a podium for creativity and a place to categorize lusts, musts and inspiration are more plentiful than ever before. (Tumblr, Pinterest, weheartitFashion is no longer encapsulated or defined by just a few people and a few opinions.

Ten years ago, all we had to go by were the latest issues of Vogue and a few fashionable friends sharing their thoughts on what matched and what made us look like frumpy beasts - now we have a vast creative space without limitations. WE build the industry, not the other way around. We no longer have to look to the pages of fashion magazines, but to ourselves and our own uniqueness. It's truly a wonder to find so many people with so many tastes, backgrounds, ethnicities, sizes and opinions together uniting under one roof, the true fashion pioneers of the digital age.

True trends are those that are built from the dust; actualized by every-day people who posses a total devotion to fashion in a way that allows them to express their inner being through colors, textures and pattern combinations, making them their own. They aren't told by the masses what to wear or how; they create art and poetry with fabric and form. This is why I love fashion.

TENNESSEE WEATHER //

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Dear Tennessee Weather,
I'm feeling a little confused. One minute you're hot, then the next minute, you're cold. (INSERT KATY PERRY JOKE) "Should I wear a sweater today? Oh wait, now it's suddenly 85 degrees"

I am confused enough already about important things:
Boys. Politics. Which conditioner is better for my split ends.
I don't want to have to worry about you, too.

Please be more consistent, it makes my fashion choices easier.

Sincerely,
Katie

My favorite thing about this outfit is my top from Hand Made in LA. It was $200, but I got it amazingly marked down to $25 from Designer Renaissance in Berry Hill. If you haven't been there yet I can't stress enough how much you're missing out.

Every time I'm there I feel like I'm treasure hunting. So many amazing designers and so many fun things to browse through. The owner, Jodi is one of the most interesting and spirited people with such a good eye for design - everything the boutique carries is hand selected for quality and style by the sweetest group of girls. I love them all!

Marc Jacobs? Check. You want a little Louis Vuitton? You've got it. I mean - aside from the over priced department stores, where else can you find such an incredible selection of designer goods at such reasonable prices! I also scored an amazing 1980's Gucci wallet for $25 a few months back. It holds my entire life.

LATE NIGHT SNACK: CAKE BATTER DIP

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Does anyone remember the glory days of Dunkaroos? I had all but nearly forgotten about this childhood treat until OH SO PRETTY the SKINNY reminded me. It sure feels good to re-visit that genuine childhood joy that came from the simple things. Dunkaroos. Lisa Frank. Clarissa Explains it all. Beanie Babies. I know you owned one. Or two. Or two hundred and twenty seven. Those things.

Now only one thing can be better than a case of light hearted childhood nostalgia. Things that look like they have a billion calories, but really only have like, 105. You totally read that right.

Get excited! Make your own colorful fun filled treat with easy to follow instructions from one of my favorite Nashville based blogs, OH SO PRETTY the DIARIES. They're a creative group of gals with a penchant for fun, easy projects. Nashville is so full of fun people!

DIY THE NINETIES:
CAKE BATTER DIP // 105 CALORIES!

DIY: WAXED DENIM

What looks like leather but fits like a jean?

Waxed denim! The latest denim craze since that huge burst of floral we saw last year. I had seen several clever tutorials over the past year but still haven't worked up the nerve (or found the perfect test-pair of jeans) to try it out but with this sudden burst of wet waxed denim looks suddenly hitting the fashion scene I can't procrastinate any longer.

Expect a tutorial from me soon, but until then you can find a great tutorial below from TheCoveted or if you're feeling lazy - you can find a few amazing pairs of Waxed jeans from J Brand & H&M.

FASHIONS NIGHT OUT: KATE SPADE

FASHIONS NIGHT OUT // KATE SPADE // GREENHILLS MALL

I can't truthfully say I've always been a Kate Spade fan. Now, however, I can't keep my eyes off their bright vamped up styles.

I was really surprised at how much I'd fallen in love with the brand over the past year or so; mostly with encouragement from my bestie and her appreciation for all things Kate. What changed? Kate Spade welcomed Brad Goreski as the brand's exclusive stylist, and boy does it show!

I couldn't find one single thing in the entire store that I didn't absolutely love. For FNO Kate Spade in Green Hills had a sweet little selection of cookies, Cokes and Perrier, which always wins me over.

After browsing and drooling over everything bright, shiny and colorful, a delightful sales associate informed us of their FNO Flash Sale - offering a 60% discount on one of their most beautiful leather handbags that night only. If only you'd have been there for that moment and the look of ecstatic joy on my BF Codie's face! It was one of those "priceless" moments Morgan Freeman eloquently narrated for Visa.

In fact, I could almost hear him narrating the whole event. Codie picked the most beautiful beige quilted bag with gold accents. It was perfect down to every last stitch - the quality was incredible. Totally jealous. If that week hadn't of been when my rent was due, I'd have one too! Oh, responsibility. Ugh.

MUSIC ON A TUESDAY: FRANK OCEAN ON SNL

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

I'm so in love with this. I hope you will be too.

I happened to catch this episode of SNL, and I'm just going to confess my love of Frank Ocean. What a voice! And check out that style. Kid's got it. So even though this isn't directly fashion related, Music is stylish!

THE NAIL REPORT:

OXBLOOD FOR FALL

Even with a gruesome name, Ox Blood will be the next big fall color.  Fitting for Halloween, don't you think? I'm already excited enough that my favorite haunting season is nearly upon us. I go hard on Halloween, you guys. If we celebrated it three times a year, we'd be better off.

LACE/BIRD PRINT/PURE AWESOME

RUEBELLE DESIGNS MAUI // PARIS

RUEBELLE DESIGNS
I needed a little aloha in my life. RueBelle Designs must have somehow sensed this all the way from Maui when they contacted me a few weeks ago about sending me a sweet little gift. I'm a jewelry fanatic and I'm always one for quality over quantity and I really do appreciate when I can get my hands on something simple, stylish and well made.

This beautiful pink bracelet from RueBelle is just that.

I can wear this piece with absolutely anything! Not only that - but its classic style enables it to travel from season to season without becoming outdated. I appreciate classic things. They last FOR. EVER.

RueBelle has been rocked by celebs like Catherine Zeta Jones and Milla Jovovich and also featured in Marie Claire, Zink and Elle.

FAVORITE FALL DIYS: WEEK TWO

Sunday, September 9, 2012

And welcome back for round two. Even though midnight is fast approaching and in a few minutes it will technically be Monday instead of Sunday - I'm still going to try and make it for our weekly Sunday 'Favorite Fall DIYS'!

Let's do this.

NO-SEW PEPLUM SKIRT
Yeah, I bet you got intimidated by the picture. I did too - but I had no idea exactly how easy it could be until I checked out these easy to follow instructions via Tashadelrae.com. I (like many others) lack a certain sewing finesse, but hot dang' can I glue the crap out of stuff. So put away those sewing machines girls and get glueing.

SCARF SHIRT
Alright, so... maybe bust those sewing machines back out? But I promise, this sewing project isn't nearly as complicated as it may look. Plus you can alter the design in so many ways it leaves a lot of room for personalization! Play with different scarf prints, cut outs or button ups. This adorable design comes to us from Gypsie Sister via inspiration from Free People Bandana Button Down.

BOOT SHAPERS USING WATER BOTTLES
Last, but not least we have these fall fashion chic (and practical!) boot shapers to keep everyone's favorite fall footwear in crisp, stiff shape. I know you've grown accustom to filling those favorite boots of yours with old issues of Vogue to keep them from getting those awkward 'slouchy leather creases' but why would you want to continue with that nonsense when you could whip up a few quick pairs of these?
